Thanksgiving Decor Ideas for your home
Guests remember how your home felt the moment they walked in, not just the turkey. A few well-placed flowers at the door, on the buffet and at each seat do more for the mood than any amount of store-bought décor. Here are seven easy touches that make the whole house feel like Thanksgiving.
At our Aurora flower shop, hosts tell us the same thing every October: they want the house to feel special without looking like they tried too hard. Good news: you don’t need a showstopper on every surface. Thanksgiving falls on Monday, October 12 this year, so there’s still time to plan. Here’s how we’d do it.

1. Start at the front door
Impressions form before anyone sits down. A small arrangement on the entry table, or a compact vase beside the door, tells guests the evening will be warm before they’ve taken off their coats. Lean into rich autumn colour, like burgundy, burnt orange and golden yellow, with a little greenery to keep it fresh. Even three or four stems in a simple glass vase will do the job nicely.
2. Keep the dining table low
Guests should be able to see each other across the table, so go wide and low instead of tall. Seating a big group? Two or three smaller arrangements spaced down the table often look better than one large one. Choose flowers with a gentle scent too, since a strongly perfumed bouquet competes with the food. We go deeper on centrepiece styles in our Top Thanksgiving Flowers guide.
3. Give the buffet its own moment
The serving table often looks purely practical. Set a low arrangement at one end, back from the dishes, and it suddenly feels like part of the celebration, while keeping petals and pollen out of the gravy.
4. Put a small flower at every seat
A single stem in a bud vase or small jar works as a place setting and a thank-you at the same time. Spray roses or a single sunflower in a small glass are easy picks. Guests can carry it home, and it makes a full table feel considered rather than crowded.
5. Let a pumpkin do the vase work
A small pumpkin or squash makes a charming container. Scoop out the top, slip in a small waterproof liner, and fill it with short-stemmed blooms. It looks like a styled magazine shot but asks very little of you.
6. Don’t forget the powder room
Guests notice the little things, and almost nobody decorates the bathroom. One bud vase by the sink is the kind of small detail people mention on the drive home.
7. Dress the mantel or a shelf with foliage
Greenery, berries and a few seasonal blooms along a mantel or bookshelf pull the whole room together. Keep flowers well away from direct heat, and keep candles clear of anything dry or leafy.
Choosing your palette
Pick two main colours plus greenery, then repeat them from room to room. When the same dahlia, chrysanthemum or sunflower shade shows up at the door, on the table and in the powder room, the house feels designed instead of decorated. Not sure what’s looking best this week? Ask your Aurora florist. Seasonal stems are usually the freshest, and often the best value.
Our florist rules for keeping flowers fresh
A few habits help flowers last through the long weekend. Start with a clean vase and fresh water, and top it up daily. Keep arrangements away from the fruit bowl, because ripening fruit releases ethylene gas that ages blooms faster. And when the oven is running all day, move centrepieces somewhere cooler until guests arrive.
