You Can Feel It Coming: Fall Is Almost Here
There’s a specific week every September when it happens — the mornings get a little sharper, the light turns gold instead of white, and someone walks into our flower shop asking for “something that feels like fall.” That week is coming, and it’s the best time all year to start thinking about your arrangements before the season is in full swing.
Autumn is genuinely one of our favorite times to work with flowers. The palette shifts into deep, warm tones that summer bouquets never quite reach, and a lot of the season’s best blooms are actually at their most abundant — and most affordable — right now. Time for Autumn Flower Arrangements!

The Flowers That Define Autumn
Dahlias are the star of the fall lineup. Their peak season runs from late summer through mid-October, and the color range is extraordinary — from soft blush “cafe au lait” varieties to deep, wine-dark reds that look almost velvet. Their sculptural, layered petals give an arrangement real depth, which is part of why they’re one of the most requested flowers for autumn events.
Chrysanthemums, or mums, are the classic autumn bloom for a reason. They come in bronze, rust, gold, deep red, and purple, they’re sturdy enough to hold up through cooler weather, and they simply last — which makes them a favorite for anyone who wants a centerpiece that still looks good a week later.
Sunflowers, asters, and celosia round things out. Sunflowers carry that late-summer brightness into early fall, asters bring a softer, star-shaped texture in purples and pinks, and celosia adds an unusual, almost velvety texture that most summer arrangements don’t have room for.
The Palette: Rich, Warm, and a Little Moody
If there’s one thing that separates a great fall arrangement from a good one, it’s restraint with color. The most striking autumn bouquets don’t try to use every warm shade at once — they commit to two or three and let them do the work. Think burgundy paired with soft gold, rust and cream, or deep amber with a touch of sage. It’s a more grown-up, layered look than the bright reds and oranges people often picture when they hear “fall flowers,” and it tends to photograph beautifully for anyone sharing their arrangement online.
Why Now Is the Right Time to Plan Ahead
Dahlias and mums are seasonal, which means the window to get the best of them is limited. If you’re thinking about flowers for a fall wedding, a Thanksgiving table, or simply want to bring some autumn warmth into your home, ordering early in the season means better stem selection and fresher blooms — rather than settling for whatever’s left once everyone else has had the same idea in late October.
We’re already prepping our autumn collection here at the shop, and we’ll be building arrangements around dahlias, mums, and seasonal greenery as soon as the first shipments come in. If you’re in Aurora or anywhere across the GTA, keep an eye out — this is one of the easier seasons to order flowers online and have them arrive looking genuinely seasonal, not just “flowers with an orange ribbon.”
A Few Ways to Use Them
- Thanksgiving tables: low, wide arrangements in mercury glass or ceramic bowls work best — they don’t block sightlines across the table, and mums hold up well through a long dinner.
- Fall weddings: burgundy dahlias paired with champagne garden roses and trailing eucalyptus are having a real moment this year.
- Just because: a simple mixed bouquet of mums and asters brings more warmth into a home in October than almost anything else you can buy.
As your local Aurora florist, we love this stretch of the year — it’s when flowers stop being just decoration and start feeling like part of the season itself. If you’d like to get on our list for early fall orders, or just want advice on what will hold up best for your event, we’re always happy to help you plan ahead.
