Take it from a leading Aurora florist- not all flowers are created equal
Not all flowers are created equal — some wilt in three days, others hold strong for two weeks. We ranked the toughest, longest-lasting blooms in our shop so your next bouquet actually gets its money’s worth.
We’ll be honest: this is the question we get asked more than almost any other at our Aurora flower shop. Someone’s picking up a bouquet for a dinner party on Saturday and needs it to survive until the following weekend, or they’re sending flowers to a friend two provinces away and want them to still look good by the time the “thank you” text arrives. So a few months ago, we started actually tracking it — cutting the same stems on the same day, keeping them in identical conditions, and writing down when each one gave up. Here’s what held up, and what didn’t.

The champions: 2+ weeks
Chrysanthemums are the workhorses of the flower world. They’re not the most glamorous bloom in the shop, but a well-cared-for chrysanthemum will easily outlast almost everything else in the vase, often pushing past two weeks. Carnations are right there with them — underrated, budget-friendly, and shockingly durable. If you want a bouquet that’s still standing at the two-week mark, these two are your foundation.
Alstroemeria (Peruvian lily) is our sleeper pick. It looks delicate, with its speckled, trumpet-shaped petals, but it’s one of the longest-lasting cut flowers we carry, regularly holding for 10 to 14 days with basic care. It’s also why you’ll see it worked into a lot of our mixed arrangements — it keeps the bouquet looking full even after the showier flowers have started to fade.
The solid middle: 7–10 days
Roses get a mixed reputation for longevity, but a fresh, properly conditioned rose from an Aurora florist who turns over stock quickly will typically give you a week to ten days — the trick is in the cut and the water, not the flower itself. Lisianthus, which looks like a ruffled mini-rose, lands in a similar range and is a favourite for anyone who wants something romantic without the rose price tag. Gladiolus also falls here, opening gradually from the bottom of the stem up, which means you get a slow reveal instead of everything blooming at once.
The showstoppers that don’t stick around: 3–5 days
Tulips, peonies, and ranunculus are some of the most requested flowers we sell, and we’re not going to pretend they’re not gorgeous — but they’re also the shortest-lived on this list. If you’re buying for a same-day event, they’re perfect. If you need something to last through next weekend, they’re not your best bet.
How to stretch every bouquet, regardless of variety
A few habits make a bigger difference than people expect. Re-cut the stems at an angle every two to three days — this keeps the flower actually able to drink. Change the water on the same schedule, and rinse the vase out each time rather than just topping it up. Keep the arrangement away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and fruit bowls (ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which speeds up wilting). And use the little flower food packet that comes with your bouquet — it’s not filler, it genuinely extends vase life by a few days.
If longevity matters more than anything else for what you’re buying, tell us that when you order. Whether you’re shopping in person, calling in, or looking to buy flowers online for delivery across Aurora and the GTA, we can build your arrangement around chrysanthemums, carnations, and alstroemeria instead of the shorter-lived favourites — same beautiful bouquet, a lot more mileage.
At the end of the day, “long-lasting” doesn’t have to mean boring. Our team at Luda Flower Salon mixes durable blooms with seasonal accents so every arrangement still looks intentional, not like a science experiment in vase survival. Next time you’re picking out flowers, ask us which stems in your bouquet are the marathoners — we’re happy to point them out.
